What to Expect with Dental Implants in Tarpon, Florida

When it comes to facial features which truly stand out for just about everyone, the smile is a big one. If you have a smile that can light up a room, you are sure to make a very memorable impression on anyone and everyone who sees you. It can also bring you great happiness and self-esteem knowing that you can smile confidently at everyone you meet. Unfortunately, there are circumstances when you may have a gap in your smile caused by a missing tooth. This can greatly diminish your dental health as well as your overall well-being.

At Tarpon Dental, Dr. Seema Amin and her experienced dental team can provide you with a dental solution that will help ensure you can start smiling with confidence once again. This solution is a dental implant.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium tooth roots or anchors designed to support artificial teeth called crowns. The implant itself (shaped like a screw) is placed into the jawbone to integrate with the natural bone.

A dentist places a connector (also called an abutment) on top of the implant, and the crowns are held in place by the connectors. When we make crowns for your dental implants, they are specially designed and customized to match your natural teeth. They will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

The dental implant team at Tarpon Dental can offer three different implant replacement options depending on your oral situation. These include:

  • For a single missing tooth, we can implant a single replacement implant to help preserve the jawbone in this area and will function like it is a natural tooth.  It is also a beneficial option compared to a bridge since it will not sacrifice the health of neighboring teeth.
  • If you are dealing with multiple missing teeth, especially in a row, you may be a candidate for full or hybrid dentures. Implants can be used to anchor removable appliances. Traditional dentures have nothing to hold them in and can create embarrassing situations while you talk or do other activities, and they can also be an annoyance when trying to enjoy your food. With today’s implant options, you can have as little as two implants to help anchor a denture to give you a better quality of life.
  • The All of 4 Technique involves placing 4-6 implants per arch and fabricating a complete bridge that is permanently put in sometimes the same day.

At your dental appointment with Dr. Amin, your dental situation will be examined and evaluated, and she will determine the best course of action for replacing your missing tooth or teeth.

What Can I Expect from the Dental Implant Procedure?

Because getting a dental implant is generally not a regularly occurring experience for most people, many patients may have some hesitation or apprehension concerning the safety of the procedure and what exactly they can expect during their appointment. To begin, it is important to remember that dental implants have been used for over 50 years now and are a safe dental technique to fill in the gaps left by missing or broken teeth in a patient’s smile. In the last several decades, the technology and techniques of performing dental implants have only gotten better, so it is the safest time to get one.

Depending on the option that is best for your dental situation, the procedure may be different for each patient. For a traditional single tooth dental implant, the procedure is a surgical one that begins with the dentist implanting a titanium root into your jawbone. You will be under sedation while this is done, so you will feel no pain. The gum is then placed over the implant so it can bond and heal.

After healing, a second surgical procedure is required to fit the connector (abutment) into the implant’s top. Afterward, the crown (false tooth) can be positioned on top of the abutment with a small screw and dental cement. The result is a natural, functional tooth that resembles and acts just like your natural teeth.
